Singing together while apart

Loving the recording each week … but it’s been a long road?

When we went into lockdown in March I couldn’t see anyway forward for us to sing together again. But the gentle persuasion of our group member Jennie,  I tentatively started recording my part for Jennie to put them together for us.

At first I was incredibly reluctant didn’t feel like singing and hadn’t the heart to express any joy or to feel positive about projecting any sound at all. It was symptom of a lot of bad news on the television and feeling that our lockdown would would never end. But committing a weekly piece of music to a record has been so immensely illuminating in so many ways that are worth noting …

So once you get past the embarrassment of listening to yourself the first time it opens up this new vision …  there is the opportunity to recognise inaccurate notes, to find poor tone, bad enunciation and breathing in the wrong places!! Ouch!

But who knew that listening to yourself sing could be so rewarding! It’s now part of my weekly routine and I aim to send at least one piece that has been practised and shaped and re-recorded several times to be added to my others.

I can highly commend it to anybody that is currently not able to get together with their fellow singers as a way of staying in touch musically but also to improve to educate yourself about the sound quality, the quality of your voice but the best bit is to hear the improvement over the weeks. Well I think so and I think our leader Andy agrees ?!!

The other thing I have noticed is I am not as inhibited when singing alone. My inner performer comes out with hand gestures and movements that would give Shirley Bassey a run for her money!! Question is will it be allowed When we get back to being together in rehearsals? Let’s see …
