Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas was written for the 1944 movie entitled “Meet Me in St Louis” It was performed in the film by Judy Garland. The scene in which it was sung came after the family were upset after they had been told that they were moving to New York with the father’s work.
The original lyrics included the line “Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow” were changed at the request of Frank Sinatra who covered the song in 1957. The lyrics were changed to : “Hang a shining star upon the highest bough”.
In the early 21st century, the lyricist Hugh Martin co-wrote totally new religious lyrics for a new song entitled: “Have Yourself a Blessed Little Christmas”
The song has been covered by many recording artists and is a Christmas standard.
