I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free is a song by the musical composers Billy Taylor and Dick Dallas, first recorded in late 1963. It is a jazz song with gospel and spiritual overtones. The song served as an anthem for the American Civil Rights movement during the 1960’s. The best known version is probably the recording by Nina Simone who covered it in 1967 for her album Silk and Soul.
Covers have been recorded by many performers such as The Lighthouse Family and Emile Sande. It was covered in 2018 by Andrea Day for the film Acrimony.
Our version consists of the four verses. The first 3 are fairly normal format with sopranos providing the main melody and the other parts harmonising. Verse 4 has the tenors taking the melody with some unusual harmonisation from the other parts.
