What spoken Latin sounds like
Here are a couple of examples of spoken Latin. The first is by an American teacher. His pronunciation is more “classical”, i.e. closer to how we think Latin might have been spoken by educated people in Roman times (of course there would have been many dialects spoken by the “common” people as well). Here’s the link.
The second example is by the Pope. His pronunciation is more “ecclesiastical”. This is the pronunciation which evolved in the church, the law and education from the centuries after the end of the Roman empire and was still in use up to the 17th and even 18th centuries. It’s somewhat similar to classical Latin but strongly influenced by Italian. We will sing using this ecclesiastical pronunciation, as is standard when singing in Latin. Here’s the link.
This page gives a pretty good description of how to pronounce the individual vowels and consonants of ecclesiatical Latin.
